Issues with food.
There
seems to be a lot of people having difficulty with
their relationships with food at the moment. Food is
being used in ways that might have been very
difficult half a century ago. Maybe it is because it
is so readily available and so comparatively cheap
that it is becoming so much of a problem.
People seek help for a variety of food related
issues. Some people find that they just need to eat
too much and are thinking about food all the time,
some people binge eat, some are bulimic, some don't
eat enough. Some can't eat certain kinds of foods,
some can't swallow their food etc etc
Quite often people hate that part of them that makes
them like this, and in doing so they split that part
off and try to bury it away. I often talk to a client
and ask them to think about the problem as helping
them in some way. In the example of a binge eater,
what function is the binge eating providing? It may
be that the binge eating is being used to avoid
certain difficult feelings.
We can use hypnotherapy to find out what causes the
desire to binge, and how the bingeing is helping the
client, once we find its function the client is more
able to accept that part of themselves and we can
work on ways of support that don't involve food. When
they are aware of the difficult feelings that the
food was helping with, we may help them work with
those feelings, find out why they suffer so, and go
about a path of healing and growth in that area.
With any food related issue I would always encourage
a client to visit their GP and talk it over with them
in order to rule out any organic cause to the
problem, once they have been given the all clear
hypnotherapy can be a very effective way of working
with these issues.
